£795 Worth of Apology

Posted on by in HZ Zine.

A short story by Sarah Drinkwater.

Once, I was a girl who fell in love with dresses. Actually, ‘fell in love’ isn’t strong enough. I was consumed by clothes; daydreaming of outfits and shopping whenever I could. It seemed like I’d ‘get’ life if only I could find the perfect red pencil skirt first.
Then, in 2007, at a strip-lit Brick Lane curryhouse, I was sat next to a brash Bradford boy with a silly name and a Tintin quiff. I thought he was crude; he thought I was stuck up. We were both right. The girl on the other side of him spent the evening with her hand resting on his thigh; the first of all the red flags I chose to ignore.

Over the next four years, we were on, then off, then on, then off, more times than I care to remember. But then it settled down, and we moved in together. Six days later, he got up and left. I got a text when I was at work saying he’d moved all of his things out.

At first, I didn’t feel much of anything. People kept saying how OK I seemed, even when I had to griddle pasta for dinner because he’d taken all the saucepans. I even had a little fling with someone I’d liked for years. When they left my house, saying they’d ‘see me soon’ over their shoulder, it hit. I felt like someone was trying to pull my heart out through my throat with a dinner spoon. I’d find myself crying on Sunday mornings in the flat I loved but had to leave – as soon as I’d paid a £900 charge for people too stupid to insist on a break clause.

I was sad and angry. Then something changed; he wanted me back. There were the rambling emails sent in the middle of the night, full of ‘I’s and no ‘you’s, the hackneyed presents, the begging texts from his mother. I didn’t reply. One day, I threw my ‘I heart Tintin’ mug at the kitchen floor and it bounced right back up again, unbreakable. I took it as a good sign.

Then there was a box on my desk at work from Selfridges, crackling with its own worth. Inside was a bag I’d blogged about, a really beautiful bag in soft pumpkin coloured leather. It was £795 worth of apology and it made me feel sick. I hauled it home, where it stayed inside in its bright yellow bag, and began writing. The words poured out of me like water. A story started itself and carried on. The day I sent my scribblings off for a creative writing course, I was wearing jeans and a T-shirt. I was in something similar the day I sold my Mulberry. I don’t remember what I was wearing the day I got accepted for the course; once I was a girl who fell in love with dresses, but now I’m a woman who can take them or leave them.

New from Hayley Kruger…

Posted on by in British Designers, New Collections and Designers.

Did you see the new items I added by Hayley Kruger yesterday?

Hayley designs her jewellery for the women that she imagined she would grow up to be. Taking inspiration from strong female icons in history and popular culture such as Miriam Makeba, Barbarella, Joan of Arc and Cleopatra. I’m such a fan of her work, and it definitely adds something new to Hannah Zakari, don’t you think?

You can check out the whole collection on Hayley’s page.

Sneak Peek: Upper Metal Class

Posted on by in New Collections and Designers.

I’ve been getting so much new stuff in lately it’s been pretty hard to keep up with blogging about them all, but I am very excited about this range and I reckon a sneak peek is in order.

These pieces are by our latest designer, Upper Metal Class, and they’re not available on the website yet but they will be very soon indeed!

If you follow me on Twitter, then you’ll know I have a love hate relationship with my camera and the absolute horror that is taking photographs of sterling silver jewellery, but these turned out well. I wonder if the images show off just how tiny and delicate these pieces are, the macro lense is really handy for this sort of photography but I’m aiming to get a few model shots of them for scale too.

I hope you like these and I’ll update the post as soon as their available online, along with the rest of the collection.

New Designer: Labyrinth

Posted on by in New Collections and Designers.

We’ve had so much new stuff in our post lately it’s taken all my efforts to keep up to date with it all – pricing, tagging, photographing, etc, etc – there’s a fair bit of work involved to get it from my desk to the website!

One of my latest finds is Labyrinth Vintage who I met at Tokyo Design week. She had travelled from Thailand to take part and I was immediately taken with her trinket style jewellery, all inspired by her original drawings, then cast and made in brass.

Here’s some of my top pieces from the collection, starting with my favourite piece, the Lady In Bird Necklace – too cute!

This sweet little bunny locket opens up to hide your secrets!

This beautiful lace necklace and earrings are real statement pieces

And for you sewing lovers we have some adorable cotton spool necklaces!

Hope you like them as much as I do!

New Year, new look for HZ…

Posted on by in Everything Else.

If you’ve been following me on Twitter then you’ll probably know that over the last few weeks John and I have been doing up the back of the shoppe. We’re finally close to finishing, and I’m pretty pleased with the results! I thought I’d share some images of the process…

This is how the back of our shop looked before Christmas, it was a bit cluttered to my eye, but xmas is a time of year when you want to be selling, so you need plenty of stuff to sell right! However, I’ve never been happy 100% with how the back of the shop looks and I was already thinking about plans for a revamp.

It didn’t take us long to go from that, to this…

and that big table you see in the first picture, well, we decided to saw it in half…

…but for a good reason! It was going to be the home for our new little type chest which we had cleaned up and planning to use as an art display cabinet.

Anyway, after much sawing, drilling, filling of holes, hammering, sanding, painting (5 coats!), etc etc, the shop is now looking like this…

So, uhh, yeah, we’ve been pretty busy! What do you think of it?

Competition Time! Day 4.

Competition closed – the winner is Katherine Brown! Yay!

Can you email me your address and I’ll get your goodies in the post next week :)

PS, keep your peepers peeled for another excellent competition next week to win lots of jewellery from HZ!

*****

It’s that time again folks, and today you can win lots of lovely things for your home!

This rather fabulous prize includes pieces from some of your favourite HZ designers – there’s a letterpress print from Gemma Correll, an Ashley G ‘Every Girl Is A Superhero Sometimes’ framed print (yup, framed!), a set of 3 Depeapa prints, some letter pressed vignettes from Yee Haw Designs, and last but by no means least, a gorgeous hand printed and made ‘Home Is Where The Heart Is’ cushion by Little Clouds. What’s even better is that, to date, all these items have only ever been available in our shoppe, so they’re pretty exclusive too!

To win this prize I want you to tell me about your favourite place in your home and why it’s your favourite. Feel free to post pictures and links.

Leave your replies in the comments and at the end of the competition, I’ll choose my favourite 5 entries and pick a winner at random from them.

The competition will close on Friday 20th January at 3 pm and the winner announced shortly after.

As always, I appreciate all your Retweets and shares on Facebook, so please help to spread the word about HZ and our wee giveaway!

Good luck!

PS just one more competition to go after this and we’ll be doing that next week!
