Cosy Up with Miss Pom Pom!

By

Colourful scarves and winter accessories by new designer Miss Pom Pom!

It’s officially Autumn in Edinburgh, and the chill is already taking hold! I love this time of year: crisp leaves, cold air, Halloween and of course, knitwear. Because the best thing about the cold is wrapping up against it, and doing it in style!

Our newest designer at Hannah Zakari is helping us do just that. Miss Pom Pom is an independent knitted accessory maker whose fun, Memphis inspired graphic knits are brightening up the shop (and our necks) right now. These oversized knits are as cosy as they are colourful, being made from a thick and super soft acrylic yarn! The bold, graphic scarves and chunky hats are a perfect match for each other. They’re a welcome antidote to the idea that Winter dressing should be less colourful!

All Miss Pom Pom’s scarves and hats are vegan and hypoallergenic, a plus for anyone who needs to stay warm while avoiding wool! Check out our collection of their goodies here:

Designer Interview – Mood Good

By

An Interview with Mood Good!

Mood Good jewellery designer Rosie Greener at wirk

We absolutely love Mood Good’s jewellery! Somehow their style manages to have both a fresh, youthful feel AND a classic timeless quality. We spoke to Mood Good designer Rosie Greener about her work, her life and her plans for the future!

What does an average working day in your life look like?

Well, I actually have a full time job as a jewellery designer for a highstreet brand, so my average working day is spent there! Mood Good is very much a side-line thing that I make time for in the evenings and on weekends. But I love doing it so I don’t mind! It just means I have to be super organised to make sure I stay on top of everything.

Do you listen to music or watch TV while you work?

It really depends on what I am doing. Because I have to use my time well, I am often speeding through a list and so don’t have anything on as I don’t want any distractions to slow me down or cause me to make mistakes. However, if I am taking a bit more time to do something visual, like edit photos or plan the Instagram feed, I might put a podcast on (usually something true crime related) or have some mindless TV (something like Friends or Gossip Girl) on in the background.

Could you tell us a little bit about your creative background? How did you first get into designing jewellery?

I have always been happiest when creating, so always knew I wanted to have a creative career of some sort. I did a Foundation Year at Central St Martins where I discovered Jewellery Design in the first week and
thought yup that’s it! I am pretty decisive so once I had decided that was what I wanted to do, I had my mind set. I went on to do a BA in Jewellery Design also at CSM which I found really valuable but also very conceptual. I enjoyed it and it definitely helped me develop as a designer, but I knew that ultimately I wanted to design commercial pieces that people like myself and my friends love and want to wear. So I feel very lucky to now be able to do that as both a job and in my own time.

What’s your personal favourite piece in the Mood Good collection?

That’s tricky… I am going to stick with the very clichéd answer that I love them all in different ways! I think it is  hard as a designer to see it that objectively because you are so close to the work. Interestingly, the ones that have sold best haven’t necessarily been my favourite. Sometimes when I originally think of a piece that I love, I know that it won’t be a best seller but a perk of having my own brand is that I can make it anyway! In a technical sense, my favourite piece is the Hand and Rose Necklace as it is the most challenging 3D design. But in terms of my favourite pieces to wear, I go through phases but am currently wearing the ‘Lion Heart Necklace’ and ‘Heart Signet Ring’ a lot. And then in terms of the brand, it’s the personalised pieces, as these always capture peoples attention and make them excited!

What kinds of things do you like to do when you’re not working?

Having a job and brand doesn’t leave a whole lot of me-time! But I try to plan my time so that I don’t miss out on having meals with friends, seeing my family and spending time with my poor neglected boyfriend! It can be tricky to juggle it all sometimes but I know it is really important so am always trying to keep on top of it.

Do you have any advice for aspiring designers?

I guess just go for it! Firstly, I would say that if they find it really natural and enjoyable to generate ideas and are most excited by the initial stages, it is important to be quite disciplined in order to move
beyond this and see things through to completion. But it is so rewarding, especially at the beginning, as it is a lot easier to make someone understand an idea and convince them that it is good by showing them as opposed to telling them! Secondly, to trust their design instinct. A designer’s eye is their most valuable and unique tool and although it is always important to listen to other’s opinions, experience and confidence doesn’t always make them more right. You know what feels right for you and your designs – do that!

What are your plans for the future of Mood Good? Do you have any exciting new designs or projects on the horizon?

In terms of plans for Mood Good, I always have so many ideas of future projects and designs buzzing around my head… It is usually a case of deciding what to work on first. It has just recently been a full year since the brand began, so I still feel like this is very much the beginning and am very excited to keep on keeping on! Watch this space!
